Cardiff Metropolitan University achieves significant annual increases in ecommerce revenue with TouchNet uStores
How do universities navigate away from outdated uStores that don’t drive growth? For Cardiff Met, the answer was TouchNet.
Making the switch with a refresh
“After training, we were empowered to easily and quickly build the uStore to match our brand. The flexibility of the new uStore enables us to make significant changes ourselves, whenever we need to.”
- Rebecca Bloyce, commercial services manager at Cardiff Met
Cardiff Met knows that most universities in the sector have been experiencing limitations for many years as they are using the same legacy solution. They want to share their experience so others can benefit from TouchNet, too.
Choosing the best customisations
“It’s been a game-changer to be able to have the store work the way we want, simply grouping products together by category with a custom look and feel, whilst staying on brand. We have seen success in ecommerce sales and activity, with an enhanced product range, supporting a wider range of schools and units across the University,” said Rebecca.
A tool built to grow additional revenue streams
In its first year of operation, Cardiff Met’s uStore produced 34% growth in revenue. Already midway through the second year of operation, the uStore is continuing to grow, consistently supporting the university’s commercial and academic activities.
Enabling decentralisation — doing more with less
With limited resources following the university’s restructure, Cardiff Met needed a solution that would allow for oversight across all departments while rolling out a decentralised administrative model.
Stuart Young, ecommerce manager at Cardiff Met, says, “it’s easy to train and teach each store manager how to develop and promote their own product range, whilst maintaining a consistent and clean look across all pages.”
Each department has its own dedicated store with the ability to add products and services whenever needed. Students can now browse to find products and short courses easily, which has resolved a long-standing challenge.
“It’s a fantastic tool for the university. Our legacy store didn’t allow the university to capitalise on the commercial opportunities. I’m really proud of what the team has achieved. The store looks great. The wide range of additional features deliver significant benefits for an enhanced customer experience.”
— Rebecca Bloyce, commercial services manager at Cardiff Met
Enhanced features

Mobile-friendly sites
- The built-in mobile view for online purchases makes going from mobile to desktop seamless.
- The uStore responsive design adapts the store layout to different screens, ensuring a consistent experience throughout the customer journey.
- In addition to front end flexibility, university administrators can easily access inventory and order management — all from mobile-friendly dashboards. Administrators can also manage promotions, packages and status updates on the go.
“One of the reasons we chose to work with Touchnet was their ambitious roadmap and focus on developing their product. We have a close working relationship and Touchnet listens to our feedback and are keen to support us to achieve our goals”
- Stuart Young, ecommerce manager at Cardiff Met
A valuable and collaborative partnership
Cardiff Met recently hosted the UK TouchNet uStores User Group, giving institutions the opportunity to share experiences, discuss best practices and expand their support network. Peer-to-peer conversations also took place, helping drive developments and pave the way for future university store enhancements.
